UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador Geri Halliwell to visit Zambia to support maternal health [10 Nov 2006|08:54am]

UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador Geri Halliwell to visit Zambia to support maternal health

LUSAKA, 9 November 2006 - The United Nations Population Fund’s Goodwill Ambassador, British singer, Geri Halliwell (formerly of the Spice Girls), will visit Zambia from 14 to 16 November to promote greater international awareness of the urgent need to reduce maternal death and halt the spread of HIV/AIDS. Both aims are contained in the Millennium Development Goals adopted by the world’s leaders in September 2000.

Ms. Halliwell arrives in the country on 14 November and will have a brief meeting with the Minister of Health, Angela Cifire, and pay a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mundia Sikatana.

Ms. Halliwell, who recently became a mother, will witness the life-threatening conditions in which poor women deliver babies, and support efforts to provide improved maternal health services.

“Every woman deserves to have her baby safely,”said Ms. Halliwell.“It is shocking that in this day and age, 1 in 6 women in the world’s poorest countries may die in childbirth.”

“Most of these deaths are preventable, all with simple and affordable services," said Ms. Halliwell. “I look forward to this mission so as to witness and to express support for the prevention efforts possible in the developing countries. I want help empower women in Africa, as healthy and educated women have a direct effect on their economies.”

During the mission, Ms. Halliwell will visit projects supported by the Government of Zambia and UNPFA that address maternal death and illnesses. She will go to urban and rural health facilities around Lusaka. The Goodwill Ambassador will also visit the North-Western Province and meet with some of the women who benefit from UNFPA-supported initiatives.

“I want to listen to these women, understand their needs and give them a voice from Zambia which is asking for help to make the world a safer place for mothers giving birth,” said the UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador. “Every mother who dies in childbirth may leave behind an orphan. Every mother who dies is a death in our extended family, no matter where she happens to live in the world.”

Ms. Halliwell was named UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador in October 1998 and works to promote UNFPA’s campaign for reproductive health care and the empowerment of women throughout the world. She went on a mission to the Philippines in 1999 to support access to health services, especially for young people.
UNFPA supports Zambia in the fields of reproductive health and population and development strategies. The support includes training health workers and providing medical equipment and transportation. Skilled attendance at birth and quick transportation to maternal health facilities are among the most effective means of reducing deaths during pregnancy or childbirth.

UNFPA is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.

Geri Halliwell's Kabbalah conversion
Monday, 23rd October 2006, 12:52

LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Geri Halliwell has turned to Kabbalah.

The former Spice Girl, who has had a struggled adjusting to life as a single mother,View the profile for Madonna on Celebrity Spotlight has found the religion a source of comfort.

A source told Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "Geri was introduced to Kabbalah by Victoria Beckham about a year ago. She really only became involved while she was pregnant. It has been a big source of strength to her through her pregnancy and in the months following. She is working on herself spiritually through reading the different teachings and giving her 'quiet time' every day."

The 34-year-old is also said to be keen to get her daughter Bluebell Madonna interested in the teachings of Kabbalah - a mystical off-shoot of Judaism - and will take her to meetings as sooView the profile for Victoria Beckham on Celebrity Spotlight as she is old enough.

Kabbalah has reportedly helped Geri stay calm despite the stress of an ongoing assault case against her former nanny after Geri found Bluebell bruised and screaming.

Geri suffered more heartache recently when she is said to have told police she was living in terror after being stalked by a mystery fan.

Kabbalah may even bring Bluebell's estranged father Sacha Gervasi back into Geri's life.

The source said: "The irony is that Sacha is Jewish and Kabbalah is a strand of Judaism, so it's possible it could bring him and Geri closer."

HALLIWELL NANNY ARRESTED

LATEST: A nanny who looked after former SPICE GIRL GERI HALLIWELL's baby BLUEBELL has been arrested by police investigating an assault on the child. The flame-haired singer, who gave birth to Bluebell in May (06), phoned police to report her tot was "bruised and bawling" after being babysat by a golf course employee in August (06). Halliwell had gone for a walk at the Hampshire, England, club, entrusting Bluebell to a temporary member of staff there. She came back to find Bluebell distressed with bruises on her arm, and she decided to call the police after the nanny refused to explain the marks. The Metropolitan Police passed details of the alleged assault to their Child Abuse Investigation Unit, who held a woman in connection with the alleged incident on Wednesday (04OCT06). A police statement yesterday (06OCT06) confirms, "A 30-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm in connection with an assault on a child. She was taken to a central London police station and bailed for return this month." A source close to Halliwell said, "It is a huge relief to Geri that the nanny faces the British justice system."

"BABY BRAIN"
Eva Simpson & Caroline Hedley

NEW mum Geri Halliwell could still be suffering from "baby brain", if her bizarre banter at a breast cancer charity is anything to go by...

Asked what she thought about Kylie Minogue's battle with the disease, Geri, 34, said: "Cancer is a very ugly and horrible word, and Kylie means something beautiful.

Kylie and her cancer story is like Beauty And The Beast."

Geri's breast cancer fashion event

Geri Halliwell has hosted a special fashion show for Breast Cancer Care.

Every model on the catwalk had survived the disease.

Twenty-two women took part in the annual event, now in its 10th year.

Former Spice Girl Geri paid tribute to them all.

"I am honoured to be hosting this very special fashion show because all of the models have had breast cancer and prove that you can feel confident and look fantastic after treatment," she said.

The 34-year-old became a patron of the charity following her own breast cancer scare.

The glittering show was sponsored by Swarovski and the women wore gowns by leading British designers.

Celebrities attending included Mariella Frostrip, Lisa Snowdon, Natasha Kaplinsky.

The models included mother and daughter Hilary Lennon and Hayley Byrne.

Hilary, 63, a retired teacher from Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, was diagnosed in 2004 aged 61. A year later her daughter Hayley, 41, learned she too had the disease.

Spice Girls plan big reunion

The Spice Girls are to reunite - for a one-off meeting at bandmate Mel B's mother's house in Leeds.

They once spent every day and night together on world tours, but these days the five former bandmates are more like strangers.
To solve the problem, 31-year-old Mel has decided to organise a girly get-together while she's over from Los Angeles visiting friends and family in the UK.
Mel, who will marry actor fiancé Eddie Murphy in LA next month, plans to make the reunion a night to remember.
The five girls - Mel B, Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, Mel C and Geri Halliwell - will meet up in Leeds, in order to keep away from the media glare in London.
A source told the Daily Star: "Mel has come home to spend some serious time with her family and friends. Naturally she wants to get the girls together.
"Mel hasn't even had time to see Geri's baby daughter and is really looking forward to it. At the moment she is trying to confirm the right date in everyone's diaries as they are all busy."
The Spice Girls officially split in 2001 - three years after Geri Halliwell quit. All went on to launch solo careers.

SMILEY HAPPY GERI
By Amber Morales Fashion Editor
IT'S clear that motherhood is doing wonders for ex-Spice Geri Halliwell.

Looking radiant in a figure-hugging black corset and black pencil skirt, the 33-year-old who gave birth five months ago has blossomed into the ultimate yummy mummy.

Gone is the garish make-up and tacky dresses, replaced instead with the most elegant of looks.

Geri, who has battled bulimia in the past, has finally learned to love her curves. And she isn't the only one.

One onlooker at the Breast Cancer Awareness Fashion Show in London last night said: "She looks totally amazing. It's hard to believe she's the same woman who leapt on stage wearing that tacky Union Jack dress."

Geri Halliwell loves being a mum

LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Geri Halliwell loves being a mother.

The former Spice Girl says becoming a mum to daughter Bluebell is the best thing that has ever happened to her.

She revealed: "Bluebell is beautiful. I'm not in a hurry to go back to work I'm just busy and happy being a mummy."

Geri, 34, who was swapping baby tips with fellow new mum pop singer Gwen Stefani in London last week, also claims she lost her post-baby weight by breastfeeding.

The single mother explained to Britain's Mail on Sunday newspaper: "Breastfeeding means the weight has dropped off, but I still have got a bit to lose."

Earlier this year, Geri told police that a nanny had physically abused Bluebell, who was born on March 7.

The alleged incident occurred when Geri left her daughter in the care of a temporary member of staff when she went for a walk at a Hampshire golf club on August 18.

When Geri returned her baby was shrieking and had bruised arms.

The former Ginger Spice tells police of an ‘incident’ involving her daughter

LONDON - Geri Halliwell has complained to police that her 3-month-old daughter was physically abused, the singer's assistant said.

"Bluebell is now happy and well, and there are no further concerns for her welfare," he added in a statement.
